The Art of PhotographyBeing a photographer since 1981, one would think I knew everything about photography... Happily, I do not. As with any art, it is forever evolving and transforming, voracious for simplicity in posing and lighting. I have been asked many times how and why I began photography. I was always fascinated with my uncle's photographic skills. At every family gathering he would bring his 35mm and take great pictures of everyone, then develop and print his own film. What magic! He ordered a subscription of a photography magazine for me. Together, we would scrutinize every picture in those publications - the lighting, the composition, the colors. I wanted to create that same beauty. It wasn't until I finished college and began teaching theater that I picked up the camera, learning f-stops, depth of field, composition, film and shutter speeds. I practiced on my students, vacation spots, and family. I was asked to photograph school dances, the teachers for open house, then... a wedding! I hurriedly signed up for photography classes: beginning and advanced portraiture; black and white developing; color developing; the business of photography; and numerous on-going seminars. And since the industry has changed from film to digital, I am re-learning that world, as well as massive computer programs to enhance the images, learning anew the style of photojournalism as well as becoming a computer technician. I see no light at the end of the tunnel, and that is fine with me. I thank God for my clients who are the most wonderful people to work with, offering me endless opportunities to make both of us happy. |
